Decorated graphene superlattices: Flat bands and strong screening without twists
The properties of graphene can be substantially altered by periodic modulations induced via strain, patterned gates, or by ad-atom deposition/intercalation. Recent studies have shown that upon decoration with alkali metals graphene can develop coupling between valleys, which can lead to flat electronic bands. We revisit the idea of using intercalation with Li, K, Ca, Cs to induce flat bands and strong electronic screening without twists.
